How to Brush Your Teeth

Proper brushing is the only way for you to have a healthy mouth. Brushing your teeth correctly takes at least two minutes, yes, 120 seconds! However, most adults do not come close to brushing that long. The average person spends around 48 seconds per day brushing their teeth. That means that the average person isn’t even brushing their teeth for half the amount of time that they are supposed to. When my patients ask me the proper way to brush their teeth, I make sure to tell them to use short, gentle strokes, and to pay extra attention to their gum-line and those hard-to-reach back teeth.

The type of toothbrush you use also has a lot to do with the healthiness of your mouth. For removing plaque and debris from your teeth, a majority of dental professionals agree that a soft-bristled brush is best. Small-headed brushes are also preferable, since they can better reach all areas of the mouth. I recommend a powered toothbrush as a good alternative as well. It can do a better job of cleaning teeth, particularly for those who have difficulty brushing. It is great to reach those hard-to-reach back teeth, and it’s also great for your gums.

You can’t have a toothbrush without toothpaste, and there are many different toothpastes available out there. Toothpastes are designed for many conditions, including cavities, gingivitis, tartar, stained teeth and sensitivity.
